Overview:

Spain is the second largest country in western Europe (after France) and is slightly larger than California in size. It is located at about the same latitude as northern California. With over 85% of Spain's border on the water, the sea has always played a prominent role in its history. The middle of Spain is comprised of a large plateau averaging around 600 meters above sea level. All along the northern border is the Pyrenees mountain chain, which stretches for 435 km. Due to the high plateau Barcelona contains one of the few good harbors along the Mediterranean coast. The majority of the coastline contains rocky cliffs or rapidly increasing elevation.  The capital city is Madrid, with over 3 million people.

Spain is well known for producing some of the world's best painters. El Greco, Salvador Dali, and Pablo Picasso are among the more well known. Due to the long occupation by Muslims in the eighth to twelth centuries, there is a rich heritage of Muslim architecture with many fine examples of mosaic art. Spain became one of the most powerful countries in the world during the sixteenth century as its empire spread to much of South and Central America, Mexico, and the West Indies. Spain's influence on these areas of the world has a strong impact to this day.

What We Are Doing Here:

We are working with a Spanish Bible school in Spain to help promote distance learning. We have also met with other ministries in the country that are interested in developing distance learning programs. To see what else GEM is doing in Spain click here.
